Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring a site so a generative AI system — one that synthesizes an answer from multiple sources rather than just listing links — is more likely to cite that site as a source inside its generated response. It's a narrower, more specific term than AEO: AEO covers direct-answer extraction broadly; GEO specifically concerns being cited inside a synthesized, multi-source generative answer.
The core mechanical difference from classic SEO: a traditional search results page returns a ranked list for a human to evaluate and choose from. A generative answer engine synthesizes a single answer and decides, on its own, which sources contributed to it and earned a citation — the user never sees the ranked list the answer was built from.

Structured data that establishes entity identity — Organization and Person schema in particular — since a generative system assembling an answer benefits from being able to confirm who's making a claim, not just what the claim says. And consistency of information across a site and across the web — a business whose name, credentials, and factual claims are stated consistently everywhere is easier for a generative system to treat as a reliable source than one with conflicting information across different pages or profiles.
This is also the direct, practical reason entity consistency sits inside the Trust layer of the T³ Model — the same discipline that helps classic SEO trust signals is the discipline generative engines lean on to decide who's citable.
The technical and topical foundations underneath GEO are the same ones underneath classic SEO and AEO — a page a crawler can't reach doesn't get considered for citation regardless of how well-written it is, and a page with no genuine topical depth doesn't out-compete one that has it, no matter how it's structured. GEO is an additional lens applied on top of sound technical SEO and real topical authority, not a replacement for either.
Link-building also hasn't become irrelevant — genuinely earned links from relevant, credible domains still function as one of the corroborating signals a generative system can use to verify a claim, the same role they've always played, just read by a different kind of system now.

No — GEO builds on the same technical and topical foundation as SEO, adding emphasis on entity consistency, structured data, and verifiable factual claims. A site with strong technical SEO and real topical depth is already most of the way to being GEO-ready.
Only indirectly and imperfectly right now — periodically querying relevant questions in major AI assistants and checking whether and how your site gets cited is the most direct manual check currently available; no major generative system yet offers the equivalent of Search Console referral data.
No — those remain useful entity-consistency signals in their own right, reinforcing the same consistent business identity that GEO benefits from, rather than being made obsolete by it.
